Jazz Fest Fishing in New Orleans

by | Apr 8, 2024

Here we are at the end of April, which means it’s Jazz Fest time! Two weekends of fun, Music, and good food. It’s also a great time to come out to the bayou and do some backwater fishing for redfish and speckled trout. This time of year, the weather is beautiful, and the fishing is good. If you’re in town and would like to get out on the water, we would be happy to have you aboard.

May Redfish Fishing Catch

This month we have mostly been fishing for reds since we’ve had a couple of late-season cold fronts that have stirred up the bays and kept us off the specks. Fishing for reds has been good, and we’ve been putting good numbers of them on the dock. Primarily fishing the backwaters in about 2′-3′ of water with popping corks with market shrimp has produced the best results. As May approaches, the fishing is only expected to get better as the waters get warmer and we get more baitfish. If you’re planning to visit New Orleans in May, you don’t want to miss the opportunity to go fishing for redfish!

To catch the most redfish in May, you’ll want to plan your fishing trips for early morning when the water temperature is cooler. As the day heats up, the redfish tend to move into deeper water. In terms of bait, you’ll want to use live shrimp or soft plastic lures with a slow retrieve. When using live shrimp, make sure that you present the bait naturally by allowing it to drift along the bottom with the current. In May, you’ll find the redfish in shallow water near grass beds and other structures. Pay attention to the tides and look for feeding birds or baitfish jumping out of the water, as this is a good sign of active fish.

Our fishing guides are experienced and knowledgeable about the best spots for catching redfish in May.
